Sun Oct. 9 DENVER — Atlanta Falcons hand the undefeated Super Bowl champs their first loss since losing to the Steelers on Dec 20th of last season. Rookie QB Paxton Lynch took over for starting quarterback Trevor Siemian, who suffered from a separation of the left shoulder in Week Four against the Buccaneers.

Running back Devonta Freeman of the Falcons was the first to put a score on the board, running for one yard to put the visitors up 7-0. The rest of the quarter was scoreless until placekicker Matt Bryant of the Falcons kicked a field goal, making the differential 10-0. The Broncos went into the second quarter scoreless.

In the second quarter, placekicker Brandon McManus of the Denver Broncos kicked a forty yard field goal.  Later on in the quarter, Bryant kicked another field goal putting Atlanta ahead again by ten. The Broncos ended the first half of the game with no touchdowns scored.

Score at half time: Atlanta 13, Denver 3.

The Broncos were the first to get possession in the third quarter, but were unable to convert. At 10:02 in the third quarter, quarterback Paxton Lynch threw an interception to safety Ricardo Allen. The pass was intended for wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. Atlanta took advantage of the interception, finding running back Tevin Coleman for a thirty-one yard touchdown. The rest of the quarter was scoreless. The score entering the fourth quarter was 20-3, Atlanta on top.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Broncos. In the beginning of the fourth, McManus kicked a 46 yard field goal, adding three points for the Broncos. Atlanta would answer with a 25 yard field goal kicked by Bryant. With 2:38 left in the game, quarterback Paxton Lynch threw the first Broncos touchdown to Demaryius Thomas. Shortly thereafter, McManus would end the game for the Broncos with a 45 yard field goal. The Broncos gave a last-ditch attempt at on onside kick, and though successful, it was called back on a questionable offsides penalty; the subsequent attempt failed.

The final score of the game: Atlanta 23, Denver 16.
Time of possession for Denver was 31:08 and 28:52 for the Falcons.
