Of all the cities in America, one has built a firm foundation in the world of sports: Denver, Colorado.
The city of Denver has been mostly blessed with successful franchises across the major pro sports, especially in the last decade. Since 2020, more than half of the professional teams in Denver have consistently achieved winning seasons and even championship titles to go along with them. It would begin with two teams that share the same home known as Ball Arena: the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, and the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL.
Beginning with the Nuggets, the team joined the NBA in 1976, and while they had stars like Alex English, Dikembe Mutombo, and Carmelo Anthony through the years, the team was rarely a contender, never reaching the finals. In the late 2010s however, the stars began to align. The Nuggets had built a star studded roster, led byย MVP Nikola Jokic, as well as key starters, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr., and then head coach Michael Malone. Although the Nuggets fell short of a spot in the NBA Finals in 2020, many at the time knew this team would one day break the curse sooner than later.
The years that followed saw additions of Aaron Gordon and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, which made the lineup stronger, and in 2023, it all came together, clinching the top seed in the Western Conference and cruising through the playoffs, including a 4 game sweep over the Los Angeles Lakers to clinch a spot in the NBA Finals. There, they would cool down the Miami Heat with a 4-1 series win, securing their first NBA championship title. Though changes have been made in both coaching and roster in recent years, the Nuggets continue to be one of the league’s top contenders. Similarly, their stadium counterpart would find this recent success around the same time.
The Colorado Avalanche would hit the ground running immediately after moving from Quebec, Canada. The Avs would win the Stanley Cup in their first season in Denver in 1996, and again in 2001. Led by legend Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote, the team would often be in the playoff hunt every year.
Once the players above had retired, the team was left to rebuild, slowly putting the pieces together through the 2010s, with new faces like Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog. By the end of the decade, the Avalanche were back to their consistent ways, with Sakic returning as a general manager and Jared Bednar in the coaching saddle. In addition, the roster got stronger with Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar among many players to finish the rebuild.

When the 2020s rolled in, the Avs struggled to get past the second round, until 2022. It was then the team finally clicked and blew past opponents in the Western Conference before denying the Tampa Bay Lightning a third consecutive Stanley Cup while clinching their third in team history. Although they have continued to stumble in the second round since their title, the Avs have since remained one of NHL’s best teams not just in recent memory, but in the league historically, just like their neighbor across the highway: the Denver Broncos.
For years, the Broncos have been the most popular sports franchise in the city, and deservingly so. Since 1977, almost 20 years after their debut, the team has enjoyed much success in its history. Led by Hall of Fame players such as John Elway, Steve Atwater, and Terrell Davis, the Broncos were one of the NFL’s best in the 1980s and 1990s. It wasn’t until 1997 when the team would win their first Super Bowl, and follow it up with another title the next year.
Elway would retire following their second Super Bowl victory. Since then, the Broncos would remain consistent, but not dominant for the next 15 years. Then in 2012, they signed veteran quarterback, Peyton Manning, which led to 4 great years of football, including a third Super Bowl victory in 2015 with a dominant defense led by Von Miller. Afterwards, Manning would retire and the team would fall into a rebuild that once seemed endless.
Between failed QB prospects and bad coaching hires, the team struggled mightily. Then in 2024, everything changed for the better. With head coach Sean Payton and rookie QB Bo Nix, the Broncos became a winning franchise once again, reaching the playoffs in 2024, and following it up with a strong 2025 season thanks to another strong defense. Although they fell short of making the Super Bowl in 2025, the fans are exhilarated that the team is back to their winning ways.

Other teams worth mentioning are the Colorado Mammoth of the NLL, who have been one of lacrosse’s best for years, including two titles in 2006 and 2022. After their championship defeat in 2023, the Mammoth had taken a step down in performance, missing the playoffs since, until 2026, where they have returned to title contention. Next is the Colorado Rapids of the MLS, a team that saw one championship victory in 2010 followed by years of inconsistency. They did finish at the top of the Western Conference in 2021 but were knocked out of the quarter finals because of a last minute goal from the Portland Timbers. Since then, they have remained inconsistent, mostly dwelling in the bottom of the playoff picture or outside looking in.
Lastly are the Colorado Rockies of the MLB. The Rockies, for a majority of their existence have occupied the bottom of the league standings, with little success. Despite a surprising run to the 2007 World Series, which saw them get swept by the Boston Red Sox, the fans have seen more losing seasons than playoff appearances. Not to mention the last three years, with 100+ losses to account for each year, including a disastrous 2025 season in which they had almost broken the record of the most losses in a single season. With new management running the team now, fans can hope the Rockies can build their way up to a better record.
It may be a while for the Rockies to ever find success, but in this time, Colorado sports fans can boast of their state’s successes elsewhere. With bright futures for the Broncos, Avalanche and Nuggets, decent teams like the Mammoth and Rapids, and anticipation for a new squad that is the Denver Summit in the NWSL, it seems like the state of Colorado is enjoying what may be the best era of their sports world.
