Bittersweet Ending to the Jose Fernandez Tragedy
Ace Wins NL Comeback Player of the Year
On November 9th, former Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was awarded the NL Comeback Player of the Year award, summing up a career that ended in tragic fashion one fateful morning of September 25th.
Fernandez was killed in a shocking boating accident while out with two friends and his death received national coverage that morning. This award comes as a bittersweet consolation, as multiple news outlets recently reported alcohol and cocaine in Fernandez’ system at the time of the accident.
After winning the National League’s Rookie of the Year award in 2013, Fernandez suffered a minor setback and worked through Tommy John’s surgery all of 2014. Fernandez played half of 2015 en route to putting together an electrifying 2016 campaign. On his way to a 16- 8 record, in which he posted a 2.86 ERA, Fernandez reestablished his stance as one of the best young players in the MLB.
This award does not bring back baby Fernandez’ father, and by no means does it take away the pain, but if nothing else it sends one of the MLB’s best up and comers out in style.
Rest in Peace Fernandez.
