Coming Attractions: ‘Once Upon a Mattress’
Think you know the story of ‘The Princess and the Pea’? Think again!
The Tony nominated show “Once Upon a Mattress” has come to the Town Hall Arts Center. The musical is under the direction of Robert Wells with a cast of 19.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a hilarious tweaking of the original fairytale, accompanied by a wide variety of music. It takes place in a medieval kingdom ruled by the evil Queen Aggravain and the mute King Sextimus. The Queen has taken over the kingdom and is attempting to keep Prince Dauntless from overthrowing her throne. She has decreed that only the princess who can pass all of her impossible tests may marry her son. The Prince meets Princess Winnifred and they soon turn the kingdom on its heels.
The original production opened on May 11, 1959 at the off-Broadway Phoenix Theater. It was later transferred within the year to Broadway for a total run of 460 performances. The show has been adapted onto TV multiple times and has also been nominated for three Tony awards: Best Musical, Best Leading Actress, and Best Musical Revival.
Students and staff of all ages are strongly encouraged to see this incredible show. “Once Upon a Mattress” will be performed from September 9th to October 9th every Thursday through Sunday. Buy your tickets now!
