Denver’s Friday night 41st annual 9News Parade of Lights did not have a dazzling beginning as a deflated balloon stalled the parade for almost an hour. But patrons who stuck around after the delay were not disappointed by the free holiday spectacular features which included marching bands, ornate floats and balloons.

The two-mile parade of 40 entertaining entries started off with a visit from Mayor Michael Hancock who walked the entire route waving at patrons and giving high fives to children.

The Parade of Lights began at the Denver City and County Building at 14th and Bannock Street. Patrons could get the best seats in the house by purchasing grandstand seating directly in front of the City and County Building. However, because of the delay, there were plenty of places to stand and watch from the sidewalk along the parade’s route.

Many school bands were in attendance, 7 total from local area high schools and universities ranging from Colorado State University to Littleton’s own Arapahoe High school.

Each float was introduced by elf-clad volunteers who held signs with the organization’s name on it. Additionally, the entire event was paid for by donations from popular Colorado companies as well generous citizens.

The elves weren’t the only whimsical creatures there. There were plenty of clowns, minions and even some beautiful Samoyed dogs.

Most crowd-pleasing were the Low riders covered in Christmas lights.

“They were my favorite!” said Karen Perez, a parade patron.

The cars were equipped with hydraulics, allowing them to lean to the side and even stand.

The parade possessed 3 giant balloons, including a new bell and scarf to adorn the 42-foot-long and 15-foot-tall snow tiger balloon sponsored by American Furniture Warehouse.

Keeping with tradition, Santa ended the parade wishing the boys and girls of Denver well as he waved and roared “Ho, Ho, Ho.”
