Disability Services needs a few good note-takers to help fellow students

Disability Services is looking for a few good note-takers.

The ACC service offers note taker ALS (American Sign Language) translator volunteer opportunities.

“Peers take notes in class,” said Jen Myrant, Disability Services academic specialist.

Although the need is not huge need for this type of volunteer work (typically only five students per semester are needed), the help is extremely important.

If students know someone who needs help taking notes in a class they already are taking, they can volunteer to help. If no one in the class can help, then another student could sit in during the class to take notes. If more assistance is needed, student hourlies, who are called academic assistants, also may help.

Myrant was careful to note that the program protects the privacy of those who use its services.

“All disabilities are kept confidential,” she said. Those needing this help should contact Disability Services, she said.
