Japanese Club to Present Ghibli’s ‘The Wind Rises’ on Dec. 8

ACC’s Japanese Club will present Studio Ghibli’s movie “The Wind Rises” on Tuesday, Dec. 8. A reception will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the student lounge, and the movie will be shown from 5-7:15 p.m. in the Waring Theater (M2900).

“With finals bearing down on all of us, I think it’s easy to lose yourself in the stresses of school,” said Ian Guy, president of the Japanese Club.

“The movie is a no-stress, no-obligation event open to everyone,” he said. “If you can make it, go ahead and lose yourself in Ghibli’s animation for a few hours. If you can’t come, then don’t worry about it. So really, it’s something relaxing that the students can do in an otherwise stressful time.”

The Japanese Club primarily serves ACC students at all campuses, but also welcomes non-students, whether they be friends, faculty or neighbors.

“Many students want to bring their friends, and it’s always more fun to watch a movie with your friend,” Guy said.

Originally, the club had a number of different films in consideration, but “The Wind Rises” was the only Studio Ghibli movie that could be shown.

“The Wind Rises is a (somewhat fictionalized) account of Jiro Horikoshi, a World War II aircraft designer,” Guy said.

“Actually, I haven’t seen it yet,” he said. “A lot of the other club members have, but I’m looking forward to seeing it for the first time with a lot of other people.”

This is the Japanese Club’s inaugural semester, Guy said. The intent of the club is to get people thinking and working together. The movie showing is just one event, but weekly meetings are what makes this club special. They discuss a myriad of topics and enjoy watching anime.

“No club has to be an island,” Guy said.

He stressed that the event wouldn’t be anything without: The Film Club, which helped them financially with the reception; Stan Lesnowski from the Art & Design Center, who provided graphic design for their logo; and the Music Department, which used handmade posters to promote the event and is lending the sound system for the movie.

“Of course, the club members and our advisor are essential to the club itself,” Guy said. “Without that, we wouldn’t be able to prepare the food for the reception.”
