School is back in session and the trees are changing, which means dodgeball! Recently, on September 21st, Arapahoe Community College (ACC) Pumas took to the court in the Fitness Center to give it their all in a good ol’ game of dodgeball. This event included students and staff members alike and gave all of the players a chance to stretch those muscles after a long Summer break.
Sue Coons, Fitness Center Facilities Coordinator, was one of the primary organizers of this year’s dodgeball game.
“Dodgeball has been one of our more popular events in the past and this round didn’t disappoint,” Coons said. “Music pumping, dodgeballs flying, wrench dodging athletes hustling and sweating all over the court! The fitness center would like to thank all of those students and staff members who participated. We are always looking to grow our events and garner more engagement from our students and staff so we always encourage recommendations for future events.”
The students outnumbered the staff, so some students joined the staff team to even things out a bit. Even though tensions were high no points were kept and the matches were just reset once one team ran out of players. About a dozen people showed up for the event. No one had to register as it was very casual.
When asked if the event is annual Coons also said,
“The event hasn’t been considered an annual event in the past but if the demand from the student population we would entertain the idea of making it so. We do like to try to have at least one event where students and staff members can come together to compete in a friendly battle to the death.”
Fitness Center representatives also commented that casual sports events like dodgeball games have been occurring off and on for some time now, but they have hopes to make them a more regular occurrence. Another event similar to this one will be held in November, but the sport of choice has not yet been decided; Fitness Center staff are thinking of possibly dodgeball again.
We also asked Coons why they even do these events in the first place.
“We do it because we think it is a great opportunity for folks to get to meet new people, get a little sweaty, have fun, and create new relationships. School is about education but it’s also about the relationships you build while you are here and we think this is a great way to foster that.”
November will be here before you know it, so if you have a hankerin’ for some dodgeball get your tennis shoes ready and let’s do this!
