IT Tech Tim Eberly offers advice: Listen to someone you admire, respect
Humans of ACC is a series of Q&A presentations about students, faculty and staff.
Today’s focus is on Tim Eberly, former ACC student and current IT technician
Arapahoe Pinnacle: How did your experience at Arapahoe Community College help prepare you for your career as an IT Technician?
Tim Eberly: I was taking Computer Networking classes, along with general computer classes, and I was offered an internship with the IT Department here at ACC. I went to work for the Network Infrastructure Manager helping with the setup of the new VoIP phone system that was to be installed.
TE (continuing): Much of what I was learning in my Cisco class was very relevant in the work I was doing with the phone system. I was putting to use skills that I had learned and practiced in a number of classes that I had already completed, such as Network+ and A+.
AP: What advice do you have for students interested in pursuing information technology?
TE: If you are interested in the IT field, or computers in general, learn as much as you can on your own and take classes that can give you a background in many different disciplines within the computer / IT field.
AP: A little bird told me that you love traveling. What is your favorite place you’ve visited?
TE: My most recent trip to Europe, I think, was the most rewarding and interesting. I got to see a little bit of Germany, Austria and Hungary. Vienna, Austria is an unbelievable city.
AP: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
TE: Find someone you admire and respect, and learn from them: how they conduct themselves, how they interact with others, what they did to become successful.
