How to make an old painted fence look new again

To some, the idea of re-painting their fence might sound like a monotonous task, and that’s because it is! However, ignoring your aging fence could not only ruin the entire look of your house but also over time, prevent your wood fence from rotting away. Today, I will show you how to remove the old paint and repaint the fence from scratch if you want to make a good job of it.

Step 1 – Begin by washing down your Fence with lots of water and soap with a thick bristled brush. You can also use a power washer for this.

Step 2 – Next you will need to start stripping off the old paint. This will take lots of time, so try to separate this job throughout a week to prevent overworking yourself. To get rid of the old paint you can work with a scraper, scrubbers and sandpaper. At this time, you can also hammer back in place any loose nails.

Step 3 – Give your wood one final sanding and apply your primer. (I used a paint with primer so I only gave the wood one final sand.)

Step 4 – After ensuring that your primer has completely dried, it’s time to repaint your fence. Exterior house paint is great at withstanding the weather your fence will endure. Choose any color you prefer. Let the painted fence dry for a full 24 hours.

Step 5 – Lastly, Give your fence a second coat of house paint if needed. Let dry for another 24 hours. After this, you can apply 1-2 coats of sealant with 24 hours of drying each. Your fence should now look as though it has just been installed and painted for the first time.

Done!
