It’s no secret that various marginalized groups have – and continue to – suffer at the hands of our government. In particular, attacks on transgender rights have been on the rise. According to the Human Rights Campaign, over 25 states in the country initiated some sort of restriction on transgender rights in 2024.
This information can be really scary and overwhelming. It leaves most of us asking, what can I do?
The good news? You can do a lot. Yes, I mean you.
For our allies and LGBTQ+ folks not directly impacted by these laws, one of the most important things you can do is show your support on every level. A few things you can do in service of this:
- Make it clear that you are a safe person to come to (and actually be a safe person to come to).
- Take the fears of your LGBTQ+ students, employees, friends, family, etc. seriously. Though it may not impact you, it is still very real.
- If and when additional anti-trans bills come before Congress, sign up to testify against them. Learn more about testifying against harmful bills here.
For people who are being impacted by anti-trans legislation, one of the best things you can do is build up your support network. This may include your friends, family, partners, coworkers, etc – and remember, ACC’s community is here for you. See below for places to connect for support on campus.
- Our Queer Alliance Club (QAC) is a place for students to connect with their LGBTQ+ peers. We get together to chat, play games, and make friends. Please reach out to one of our advisors ([email protected] or [email protected]) if you are interested in joining.
- The LGBTQ+ Affinity Group exists to support ACC Employees that identify in the LGBTQ+ community through open discussion in a judgment-free environment, and through outreach with the ACC community. If you are an employee interested in joining this group, contact [email protected].
- If you have concerns finding and/or navigating resources in or outside of the school, contact the Dean of Students Office at [email protected] or stop by their office (M2720, Littleton campus).
