International Coffee Hour is a space for domestic and international students, staff, and faculty to celebrate culture and diversity, connect and enjoy coffee, tea, snacks, and games. This event is organized by Jason Schlueter and Juliet Beckman, both English Faculty. The International Coffee Hour meets in the student lounge area. The international Coffee Hour has been held four times in Sept and Oct and will meet three more times, with the last meeting mid-November. The student life office has sponsored the International Coffee Hours event.
I attended the international coffee hour on Sep 5 to give a report on this event. Jason begins asking a question that was written on a card to discussion circles. There were five ACC students and three faculty that attended the circle. Jason the English faculty brings culture into the conversation and students begin to talk about their own culture experiences. The students that were in the discussion circle were engaging in the conversation while students were sharing their culture experiences students grab some coffee while connecting with their fellow peers and faculty.
The next question that the group discussion brought into that conversation was “what language would you speak?” students began to connect with the topic while students left early. Other questions that the group discussed include “who was your hero?” An ACC student named Ethan started sharing some heroes that he looks up to into the group circle. Other students started to join into the conversation.
Students drink some coffee and eat snacks that the international coffee hour provides for everyone. Veronica Chavez, the World Languages Faculty, brings up a topic about sexual violence involving sex crime. Students and faculty started to share their thoughts about sexual violence.
“This event is for everyone,” said Jason Schlueter.
The international coffee hour meets again on October 19, and November 2 and 16 on the 2nd floor in the student lounge.
