My Old House: Here’s how to create inexpensive, custom outlet covers
ACC student Carolyn Jarvis is working her way through her 1924 Denver bungalow a project at a time. Here is today’s report.
Plastic outlet covers are cheap, less than a dollar apiece, and most homes already have them.
However, if you want a classier look through the use of a metal or colored outlet covers, you’re going to need to shell out $5-10 an outlet. This can add up if you’re doing your entire home.
Today we are going to explore a more affordable option and learn how to give a cheap outlet cover a more luxurious look with simple spray paint.
Materials
• Spray paint with a metal finish
• Tools
• Flathead Screwdriver
• Utility knife (optional)
Step 1
Remove wall plate by using your flathead screwdriver. If your outlet has been painted over and is hard to remove, outline the outlet with a utility knife and the plate should come right off.
Step 2
Lay your plates down on a clean surface in a well-ventilated area.
Step 3
Apply light coats of your spray paint, making sure to allow the surface to dry completely between coats. You can also spray the screw head for a more cohesive look. (I chose Rust-Oleum Hammered Copper Spray Paint)
Step 4
Almost done! Just install your new chic outlet covers and enjoy!
