Current State of Fall and Winter Sports For Colorado High Schools
Due to the complications with Covid-19, The Colorado High School Activities Association has had to make several changes to the 2020 high-school sports calendar. According to their 2020 calendar, cross country, boys golf, softball, boys tennis, and even football will be played in the fall season. CHSAA’s original plan for football was for it to be played in the spring season because of all of the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19, but that all changed when Gov. Jared Polis decided otherwise.
On Sept. 12, 2020, Polis tweets out, “We are currently working with @CHSAA to approve variances for football and field hockey, and we will work together to develop guidelines or variances for additional sports at a later date and indoor sports when they can safely be played.” In order to follow the CDC guidelines, CHSAA’s Covid-19 mandate says, all players and coaches will have daily temperature checks, sanitation on all equipment, and coaches will have to wear a mask at all times.
Although we have seen some changes happen for the fall season. It looks as if all the winter sports are going to happen as usual. CHSAA’s calendar says basketball, ice hockey, skiing, girls swimming, and wrestling will go on as planned. Despite everything CHSAA has had to overcome, it looks as if there’s a clearer path ahead.
