The Wait for Rocktober is Almost Over
By October 2007, the Colorado Rockies had made a name for themselves, after making it all the way to the World Series. Unfortunately, the Rockies were defeated by the Red Sox in four games. Ten years later, the Rockies are on their way to a postseason run that has Colorado buzzing.
After the disappointing finish to the 2007 season, many fans expected the Rockies to come into the next season firing on all cylinders. The Rockies however, since their miraculous 2007 season have only made it into the postseason once. In fact, the Rockies haven’t seen October since 2010.
Here we are seven years later and the Rockies are making serious noise. As of September 21, 2017, the Rockies sit comfortably in the third place position in the NL West and fifth in the division. This spot almost guarantees them a wild-card game and a trip to the postseason.
This season the Rockies started off hot right off the bat. Before the All-Star game break in early July, the Rockies were at an impressive 52-39. They were the hottest team in baseball and looked to make an even stronger push the second half of the season.
This latter half of the season has been rocky for the Rockies. They have beaten teams by as many as 16 runs, but have lost games that were penciled in as easy wins.
Consistency has been lacking on the mound; injuries and inexperience have lead the young Rockies pitchers to give mixed results over the season. Other teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers caught fire as well, taking complete command of the NL West. The Arizona Diamondbacks have also switched gears since the All-Star break and are making things difficult for the Rockies.
Despite all these hurdles the Rockies sit poised, ready to make an impact. In the month of September alone, the Rockies have had showdowns with both of their division opponents. Their first series with the Diamondbacks; September 1-3, was hard. The Rockies lost that series against them, giving up 20 runs in 3 games. Their second series was better, as the Rockies were able to win two games out of four, proving that they can compete with the best teams in the league.
The series that impressed many was the Rockies four-game stretch against the number one team in baseball, the LA Dodgers. The Rockies managed to win all four games sweeping the Dodgers and building momentum going into the postseason.
Should the playoffs start today, the Rockies would have to face the Diamondbacks in a wildcard series. If they can get past the Diamondbacks, they have a date with the Dodgers — a team that they should be able to beat. If all things go well, a trip the NL Finals and even the World Series is possible.
The team has been on another roller coaster as of late. The Rockies ended up beating the San Diego Padres by 16 runs, but then followed up that amazing performance with three straight losses. One loss to the ripped apart Padres and two losses to the worst team in their division, the San Francisco Giants.
These losses have suddenly opened the door for Milwaukee to take the remaining wild card spot, currently owned by the Rockies. Milwaukee is one game behind the Rockies and slowly moving forward to try and crush any hopes of a Rocktober Sky.
These last ten games of the season could prove to be some of the most important in Rockies history. Ending a seven-year playoff drought and re-igniting the passion of the Rockies faithful is on the line. In 2017, not one Colorado team has made a post-season appearance, giving the Rockies a chance to represent our beautiful state in sports. Will the Rockies crumble within the next week, or will the team step up and give us a reason to cheer?
